This year, about 700,000 Americans will have a stroke and
nearly 168,000 of those people will die.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the
brain is suddenly interrupted. A stroke affects the arteries within and leading
to the brain. Symptoms of a stroke may include sudden numbness, weakness, pain,
dizziness or impaired vision or speech.
Signs of a Stroke

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg,
especially on one side of the body

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding

Sudden difficulty seeing in one or both eyes

Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or
coordination

Sudden severe headache with no known cause

As one of the only 19 Primary Stroke Centers in New
Jersey, Somerset Medical Center quickly diagnoses strokes, tailors a treatment
and intervention program to an individual patient’s needs and continually
analyzes data to improve treatment plans and response procedures.
The Stroke Center brings together physicians
from multiple specialties, including neurology, internal medicine and emergency
medicine, to provide comprehensive evaluation and management of patients with
cerebrovascular diseases - any disease in which the arteries in or connected to
the brain are not functioning properly.
Following the diagnosis of a stroke, a comprehensive
treatment plan is developed specifically for the patient. Treatment may
